Oxford Women's Training - Key Achievements
- A Training Course for Returners
A 2-year Foundation Course for Lab Technicians at Kent Science Park starts on 17 September. This is a joint project between JIVE South East and SEEDA. SEEDA is offering bursaries to 4 returners to pilot the course. Returners will gain work experience and vocational training. 6 returners have applied and 4 are likely to be accepted and awarded bursaries for the 1st year of the course. If successful, SEEDA hope to offer bursaries to more returners on additional SET-related vocational courses based at other science parks.
- Careers Workshops for Returners – A Joint Venture
A joint scheme between JIVE South East and Imperial College Careers Service offering careers workshops to returners runs a 2nd series this term. From this month they are also offering 1-1 guidance and mock interviews. Returners will be reimbursed for the cost of the careers interviews by UKRC. If this model is successful it is hoped we will be able to offer this service through other university careers services as a way of preparing to mainstream careers support for returners.
- Mentoring Training at University of Portsmouth
University of Portsmouth, Faculty of Computer Technology and Science has received JIVE mentoring training for mentors, mentees and a Mentoring Co-ordinator. Two training sessions have taken place to date.
- Network Back to SETwork Events for Returners
JIVE South East have run 4 Network Back to SETwork events at the Institute of Physics in London for over 200 returners who have completed the T160 Open University course. These events combined practical workshops with an opportunity for returners to meet each other and network with employers and SET recruitment consultants and support organisations. Representatives from QinetiQ, KBR, Shell, rlf Construction, Reed Scientific and LabSupport have all participated in panel sessions to address challenging questions by returners about part-time working opportunities, managing career breaks and the barriers facing women returning to SET work.
- Hounslow Homes - Apprentice Recruiting
There are approximately 330 employees in the Property Services Directorate of Hounslow Homes. All craft employees are City & Guilds or NVQ 2/3 qualified. The maintenance workforce is 99% male. In contrast, the call centre supporting Property Services has a 75% female staff. See the JIVE
