JIVE Project Objectives
Two National Resource Centres have been set up in Wales and Scotland to ensure that the work of the partnership is continued, to include local initiatives:
Wales
JIVE Wales is based at The Women's Workshop, Cardiff Training Centre, Cardiff and covers the whole of Wales.
For women returning to education, training and the workplace, the Women’s Workshop runs different levels of women only courses that include Information Technology, Career and Personnel Development, English as a second language, Confidence Building, Home Maintenance skills and Pacific Institute training. The Women’s Workshop also provides consultancy and training for other voluntary sector groups or small businesses in ICT and Management. The Women's Workshop also has a number of I.T. and traditional training suites which can be hired by clients, with or without trainers.
JIVE Wales is involved in mentoring, working with employers and policy makers, as well as encouraging young women to enter into Science, Engineering, Construction & technology. In addition, JIVE Wales aims to facilitate partnerships between Schools, Colleges, Work based learning providers, Sector Skills Councils, SET Point Wales, ELWA, Higher Educations Institutions, Careers Wales, Employers, Policy influencers and makers. Jive Wales will hold dissemination events around Wales promoting good practice.
JIVE Wales has been involved with many colleges and universities across Wales during National engineering week, Science week and International women’s day, promoting and encouraging women in Science, Engineering, Construction & Technology. Additionally, they have attended many careers events and open days. JIVE Wales have also held women only two-day taster sessions in electrical aerial installation (in conjunction with Swansea College). Many of these women are currently completing a 1-year part-time City & Guilds in Electronic Servicing (6958) held at The Women’s Workshop.
Scotland
The Scottish Resource Centre was established to support the participation and progression of women in science, engineering and technology in Scotland.
This is done by providing high quality, accessible services for women working in Science Engineering and Technology, for potential women returners, and for employers, membership organisations and professional associations.
The Centre is based at Napier University in Edinburgh and consists of three partners:
Napier
University
University
of Glasgow
Glasgow
Caledonian University
The partners ensure delivery of programmes, including:
- A Mentoring Scheme, providing support to women not only on a one-to-one basis, but providing a framework of contacts with whom to meet and share ideas
- Returners’s workshops which offer women interested in returning to jobs in science, engineering and technology the chance to meet together and update skills
The Scottish Resource Centre raises issues affecting women and employers and publicising our services. Future activities will include:
- Workshops for employers and returners around Scotland, sharing materials developed by the UK resource centre
- Supporting women’s transition from study to employment in Science, Engineering and Technology
- Working with University placement providers to further develop placements for women in Science, Engineering and Technology
- Developing a strong partnership of people working to improve women’s progression in Science, Engineering and Technology
